TIPP Reflection

Dominique’ Maloy TEL 313 December 8, 2009 Final I have always been pretty good with computers and technology. I can use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the internet, a projector, movie maker, etc... I never had any difficulty with technology because I like to explore and discover new things. When I do not understand how to use or do something, I teach myself how to do it. When I buy something new that is a technology device, I never read the directions because I like to experiment and teach myself. That is what I did with a computer. Even though I know a lot about computers and how some of the applications, this course did teach me about some new devices. I did not know what blogs were before this course and I did not even know what a smart board was until I moved to Arizona. By taking this course I got to discover and learn about new devices that could help me in my future classroom. Now that I have gone through this class, I feel more comfortable integrating technology into the classroom. I see how many different ways technology can help students stray interested and do their work that it would be beneficial to me to use these tools. “Lack of interest is generally the number one reason that students give for not learning to mastery” (Sherman & Kurshan, 2005). Technology can help keep my students interest. A lesson I would like to use to integrate technology into my classroom is “The 12 Days of Christmas” Interest Unit (Hemmer, 1998). Students look for the current costs of “The 12 Days of Christmas” by using newspapers, Internet surveys, and other sources. Students are loaned $100 of play money and then gather information on bank loans from the newspaper or the Internet. After totaling the costs for all items in “The 12 Days of Christmas,” they create a spreadsheet that demonstrates five methods of financing. The group with the best financing scheme wins. This is a good way for students to learn math and learn how to research and use excel for their data. I grew up with computers, not the computer they have today but computers none the less. If I had access to computers they have today, my knowledge of computers would be so strong. I think if kids are going to use computers at home they should be able to use them in the classroom. When I become a teacher my goal is to be able to ask questions to help my students discover the answer themselves. “For this type of teaching to be successful, I will need to give students time to explore the material and construct meaning from the experience” (Sprague & Dede, 1999). “Because “when one integrates student experiences with technology into the curriculum, the role of the teacher changes” (Sprague & Dede, 1999). That is what I want. Even though I will be a teacher, I will also be a student. I will be learning how to be a better facilitator. As a student, my goal is to learn how to be a better facilitator. I want them to interact with one another while they learn but at the same time not lose control of my class. I want to be an effective teacher while allowing the students to discover and learn for themselves. The best way for someone to learn and master a concept is to do it themselves and/or teach it to someone else. If I can get my students “sharing ideas, asking questions, discussing concepts, and revising their ideas and misconceptions and my classroom can have a “collaborative environment [that] can encourage the knowledge construction needed for more lasting learning” (Sprague & Dede, 1999). I will have fulfilled my goals. Technology is changing before our eyes. My uncle has a huge television at his home. We watch movies on it all the time and it looks great. He just recently bought a brand new HD television. If I thought his first television was was great, this television is amazing. When we watch Sunday night football, I feel like I am at the game. You can see the sweat dripping from their foreheads. Today, I cannot imagine the technology being any better but I know that it is going to get even better. Technology such as this can be amazing to have in the classroom. I want to try to stay up to date on the technology advances by taking courses and reading and watching media. Newspapers, the internet, television, radio, and weekly newsletters in my email can help me stay learn about new technologies that come out. Teachers are students too. They are constantly learning just like their students. As a student I am currently staying up to date on new technology that is coming out that is benefiting me like i phones and computers. As a future teacher, I will also stay up to date on new technology that will benefit my students. My main goal is to be the greatest teacher. I want my students to remember me. I want to change live. I know that there will be students who do not want to learn, there will be students that try and make my life crazy, there will be students who bring a lot of baggage with them, and there will be students who are not up to grade level. I know that integrating technology and creating lessons will take a lot of my time and effort. I also know that there is a rough road ahead of me, but I am excited and up for the challenge. About Me

Hello! My name is Dominique' Maloy and I moved to the Tempe area about two years ago. I was born in Tempe but moved shortly after to Seattle, Washington then to Las Vegas, Nevada. I am a very active person. I love to play and watch sports. In elementary school I use to play football with my older brother and the other kids around the neighborhood. When I was in the sixth grade I decided to play football for the city of Tacoma on a pop warner team. When my family and I moved to Las Vegas, I continued to play football in middle school. I also picked up basketball and track while in middle school. When I entered high school I played soccer, basketball and ran track. At the end of my career I had 10x varsity letters (2 in soccer, 4 in basketball, and 4 in track). My basketball team was 2x state champions my freshman and sophomore year and was state runner-up my senior year of high school. I am a 15x state champion in track; 4x in the 100 meter dash, 4x in the 200 meter dash, 4x in the 400 meter dash, and 3x in the long jump. I hold my high school record in the 100, 200, 400, and long jump. I also hold the state meet record in the 200 and 400.
